Meet Your 2019 MADE Business of the Year Nominees

In the heart of Ohio, two friends with restaurant experience and a love for bringing people together with memorable food and beverage began a partnership.  They dreamed of an upscale bistro with affordable American fare. Neighbors and friends would find a table they could call their own and always feel welcome.

Chef Todd Uhlir and Jeffrey Finklestein brought their dream to life in their hometown of Troy, Ohio with Basil’s on Market.  The name was inspired by the idea of fresh, local ingredients and the restaurant’s Market Street location.

Two years after opening in Troy, Todd and Jeff opened a second location in downtown Dayton, nestled on the banks of the Miami River.  Patio guests of Basil’s in Dayton can watch the mighty Miami roll by while they enjoy the breeze and a relaxing meal.

In 2018, the duo opened their third Basil’s On Market in Mason, a suburb in Greater Cincinnati. The light, airy main dining space is balanced with cozy dining rooms, a generous private dining space and outdoor dining overlooking a lush water feature.

Jeff and Todd’s passion has created a winning combination.  Each Basil’s location is devoted to the same vision: provide a place where friends and family can spend time together and enjoy creative comfort food favorites made with local ingredients. Look for more Basil’s on Market locations on the horizon.

In the meantime, Jeff, Chef Todd and everyone at Basil’s looks forward to welcoming you soon!

Like the ruby, businesses and organizations have many facets that must be polished to maintain brilliance. Which facet is your strength and why?

People are the most important facet. Those who join us to dine and those who are in our employ. We believe that finding community is so important to being successful.

If your company culture, had to be summed up in five words or less, reflective of a gemstone, what would they be?

People: rare, precious, unique and valuable.

Creative Contracting Incorporated was established in 1993. Our core business was founded on providing quality craftsmanship and excellent service at a fair price. In 1996 we collaborated with a Cincinnati based architectural firm on several residential remodeling projects. Stan Better Architects (SBC) provided architectural design specifications and Creative Contracting provided the construction services required to bring our client’s remodeling dreams to life. The relationship between the two companies was such an incredible success, in 2001 Creative Contracting Inc. and Stan Better Construction merged to create SBC Companies. Over the next 15 years we worked together to establish our DESIGN/BUILD business model and focused our attention on the residential and light commercial remodeling market. In December 2015, Creative Contracting Inc. acquired SBC Companies and relocated our offices back to Mason, Ohio. Under new management, Creative Contracting Inc. set its sights on redefining the image of an industry plagued with negative stereotypes and low expectations. The construction industry has become fraught with dysfunction and lack of trust. Our business model challenges the perception of an entire industry, breaks the negative stigma, and brings integrity back to our profession.

Our business has strategically evolved and deliberately adapted to ensure we provide our clients with value and professionalism. It has allowed us to meet or exceed all strategic and financial projections. The financial success of our company is mandatory and measurable. It has allowed us to reinvest in our future.

In summary, it is the attitude and culture of our company that defines us. Creative Contracting Inc. has built an enjoyable and rewarding work environment while bringing honesty, integrity, and most of all Pride back to the remodeling industry.

Like the ruby, businesses and organizations have many facets that must be polished to maintain brilliance. Which facet is your strength and why?

Communication - sadly our industry is fraught with negative stereotypes and low expectations. Our business model strives to redefine this perception. At Creative we believe in active listening and authentic communication.

If your company culture, had to be summed up in five words or less, reflective of a gemstone, what would they be?

Like the ruby, businesses and organizations have many facets that must be polished to maintain brilliance. Which facet is your strength and why?

Our culture is based on five key pillars: quality, consistency, responsibility, passion and community. We believe that all of these go hand-in-hand in creating the culture of our company, which we are very proud of. Each of our team members have different strengths in these areas while we are always trying to strengthen each.

If your company culture, had to be summed up in five words or less, reflective of a gemstone, what would they be?

Act as if.
